I suggest you get a good map of the area before you head out on your adventures. There are several maps available, some better than others. Here is my review of the maps available, as well as where to get these maps.

New! Clip-On Guides!

Trail Town Maps "Trail Guide to the Beartree/Damascus Area" - this map was first published in 1997 and is currently in the third edition. It includes the area from Damascus east to Skulls Gap.  It includes a trail matrix, or table, that lists distances, permitted user types, blaze type, difficulty, trail number and amount of use. This map shows the new State Route 600, and part of the new Iron Mountain Trail re-location. It includes contour lines, National Forest boundaries, all roads, parking areas and information centers and advertisements for places that will be of interest for trail users.  This is the best map for local trail navigation. Cost is $3.99

This map is available  at Adventure Damascus, and the Bike Station.

Clip-On Guides - Trail Town Maps has done it again. Clip-On Guides are single ride maps, directions and elevation profiles, all on a sturdy, laminated 2 1/2" by 3 1/2" card that clips onto your jersey, pants, pack or anyplace else you want to clip it. They are cheap at only $1.99 each and make great reference guides. No more taking out that big map, then trying to fold it back, not to mention worrying about it getting wet. Clip-On Guides are great! Get them at Adventure Damascus.
Trails Illustrated Mt Rogers NRA Map.- released in early 2001, a complete guide to the NRA featuring all trails, parks etc. A very useful map and a much better choice than the old MRNRA map. Done on waterproof, tear resistant paper. A little more expensive than others at $9.99 but will last a long time. Get yours at Adventure Damascus Bicycle Shop. If you want a more detailed map of the Beartree area MTB trails, stick with Trail Town Maps Beartree/Damascus area map.
Mount Rogers National Recreation Area Map, Jefferson National Forest - This map was produced by the USFS and covers the entire MRNRA, making it difficult to use for navigating anything but the "major trails" and roads. Many of the singletrack trails listed in the rides of this Web site are very difficult to see on this map. It is good for an orientation to the entire MRNRA as it shows boundaries and Wilderness Areas. Last one I bought was $3.00 but they may cost more now. Available at USFS Information Areas, Mount Rogers Outfitters   and some of the outfitters listed above.
USGS 7.5 minute series quadrangle maps - Elevation, orientation, details. Most are out of date however and they are not very convenient to carry with you either. Seems like I paid around $4 for the last ones I bought. The really cool thing to have is the DRG (digital raster graphic) CD ROM with all these maps from SW Virginia to Winston-Salem NC. It is the Winston-Salem CD and I paid $35.50 for mine and ordered it directly from the USGS. It has 64 maps on it which comes out to about 55¢ each and you can download some free viewing software. I use mine with my GPS to make maps and find new trails.
